The beginning of the Season of Creation is September 1st. Officially recognized by Pope Francis in 2015, the Season of Creation began in 1989 when the Orthodox Church recognized the first day of September as a day of prayer for creation. Soon after the World Council of Churches expanded the season and since then, Christians all around the world have come together in this season to pray for, celebrate, and protect God’s creation. Whether it is new to you or an annual observance, United Church of Christ’s Creation Justice Ministries invites you to participate in this season of celebrating God’s creation and our place in it.
Opening Prayer Service
This 1st day of September, Feast of Creation, also known as Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, opens the Season of Creation 2023. Faith leaders from around the globe will lead this time of prayer and reflection as we celebrate the start of the Season of Creation, on this year’s theme, “Let Justice and Peace Flow”.
As the people of God, we must work together on behalf of all Creation, as part of that mighty river of peace and justice.
Prophet Amos cries out: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5: 24) and so we are called to join the river of justice and peace, to take up climate and ecological justice, and to speak out with and for communities most impacted by climate injustice and the loss of biodiversity.

Launching the Green Lectionary Podcast!
Over the weeks of the Season of Creation, UCC will be launching the Green Lectionary podcast, a conversation on scripture through the lens of creation justice. We have invited scholars, activists and preachers to join the CJM staff in discussing how we might preach well known passages with an eye towards caring for all that God has made.
