Ohana Youth Group

Our youth group creed: This is a place of welcome. It is a place that is different from the world out there. It’s a place to be yourself. Everyone is welcome here. It doesn’t matter who you are and how you come to the space. Bring your whole self here and be welcome!

If you are a middle school or high school youth, the best way to get involved is simply to show up at youth group. You will be glad you did.

Middle School Youth Group

2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Sundays, from 11:30-12:30 beginning 9-12-21

Instead of offering our middle school youth both a Sunday School class and Youth Group, Mark and Gretchen will lead one fun and faith filled youth group offering. As long as our church is worshipping outdoors or on Zoom, youth groups will take place outdoors as we have been doing over the last year. We plan to meet in the outdoor space in front of the lobby, under the covered front walkways and in the grassy area by the large wooden cross. We also plan to make use of our South lawn and adjacent University Park. Be on the lookout for slip n slide kickball, water balloon toss, photo scavenger hunt, capture the flag, turtle tag, Prince Pucklers ice cream, nature hikes, Mentos in Coke, slime making, chalk art contest, journaling, crafts, spiritual sandwiches, opportunities to lead in worship and to serve… and more!

High School Youth Group

2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Sundays, from 4:00-5:30, beginning 9-12-21

High School Youth Group will meet in the outdoor space in front of the lobby, under the covered front walkways and in the grassy area by the large wooden cross. We hope that we will be able to hold at least one retreat this Fall, as well as offering other fun opportunities like the pumpkin farm, movie nights, and beginning with our Ocean Beach clean-up on Saturday, September 25th, from 4:00-6:00, followed by time to hang out at the beach for sunset! We will also begin planning stages for the UCC National Youth Event at Purdue University, currently scheduled for June 27-30, 2022… and we’ll begin planning and registration for SSP Smith River, CA and Summer Fun Camp at Camp Adams in Molalla. Service opportunities will continue to be available in collaboration with First Place Family Center, as we also seek new ways to serve our community safely.

Youth Group Content: We will create opportunities for spiritual formation, following the curriculum “Arise!” based on the Sierra Service Project model. We plan to lean into the outdoors this year, with hikes, exploration, games, crafts, journaling, dyads, service opportunities, and all of the other fun activities that our youth have come to know and love. We plan to have an opportunity to experience Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese practice of “forest bathing”, as we begin to discern what Wilderness Ministries might look like at FCC. Our first several weeks will be focused on connecting with one another, as we seek to build and strengthen our group dynamics.

On the first Sunday of each month (Communion Sunday), we invite all MS and HS Youth to join us as lay leaders and participants in worship. We will also be planning some fun intergenerational events on 1st Sunday afternoons, including events welcoming College Students and Young Adults, TBD. Our FCC youth are always welcome to participate in worship on any given Sunday, but we will emphasize the first Sunday of each month as a special invitation for youth participation.

College Student and Young Adult Seekers Group

Our College Student & Young Adult Seekers Group has been a welcome point of light in our recent times. Many young adults are participating and we are building a strong community through our online Zoom meetings every 2 weeks. This group has become a touchstone in our lives…a place where we vent frustrations, share insights and strategies, find healing, and meet each other where we are. There are no judgments or criticisms, just listening, learning, praying, aspiring…no work is required, just show up and jump in the dialogue, or just show up and listen! I encourage all of our college students, young adults and their peers, colleagues and friends to join us. We have individuals in this group from Vermont to Washington, so please join us, regardless of your location or your journey in life – ALL ARE WELCOME!

Mahalo,

Mark Lindberg, Youth Pastor, markl@fcceugene.org
