Breakfast Brigade
Recently, Eugene Catholic Worker (serving the homeless at Washington/Jefferson since 2003) was absorbed by Burrito Brigade in order to maintain non-profit status. Many of the people served are unable to be housed. Many have medical issues that preclude their acceptance into what housing is available. Many are ineligible for SNAP, SSI, or any other public assistance.
Breakfast Brigade provides a takeaway lunch, a hot breakfast, coffee/tea/cocoa, and when available tarps, tents, gloves, handwarmers, boots and other clothing. This offering of good food for hungry folks is from 9 – 10 a.m., Wednesday to Saturday.
Thus far far we have made more than 4000 sandwiches in 5 months and bagged more than 2500 snacks for homeless takeaway lunches. We are so grateful for the continued support of the Church.
Though I would like them all to find housing, I have no hope of that, but I am not discouraged. I cannot heal them; I can feed them. I cannot change their situation but I can ameliorate the harshest moments of it. Jesus said the more you give in love, the more you have and I certainly feel that way. This mission has blessed me far more than I can say.
