In November, the Social Justice and Witness Committee participated in a strategic planning session facilitated by Laurie Swanson Gribskov. As result of this half day retreat, the committee clarified its purpose and role.
The Social Justice and Witness (SJW) Committee is a standing committee in the by-laws at First Congregational Church. The purpose of the SJW committee is to act as an initiator of social justice activities at FCC and to facilitate and support other members of the congregation to address social justice issues. We are a portal for people to get involved in social justice issues that are important to them, and the committee reflects and amplifies the social justice values of First Congregational Church.
The work of the SJW committee fits into four categories:
✦ advocacy for social justice issues in our community, our state, and nation;
✦ leading or supporting actions taken by FCC that address social justice concerns;
✦ education of our church community about social justice issues; and
✦ donation of funds allocated by our church to address social justice issues.
