Online Book Club: This Is How It Always Is
Sunday, Sept. 3 at 9 a.m. in the Wheeler Room
The First Congregational Church Facebook Book Club will hold its second in-person discussion of This is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel during the Adult Education Hour at 9 a.m. Sunday, September 3 in the Wheeler Room.
This session will be interactive as we discuss, with facilitation from Don Brasted Maki, this fun, easily read book. It is uplifting and optimistic but realistic about the challenges posed by raising a Transgender child. Please read as much of the book as you can and come to the discussion having selected one of your favorite passages, prepared to share.
Laurie Frankel’s, “This Is How It Always Is” is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.
Don Brasted-Maki is facilitating discussions of the book, “This is How It Always Is” by Laurie Frankel. The discussions will be both online on our Facebook” First Congregational Church Book Club” page, and in-person.
From Don Brasted-Maki: “Based on my reading of the book, and my own experiences raising a transgender child, this novel is real and engaging. Frankel has a gift for clever use of language to reveal the inner workings of the mind of her highly intelligent protagonist who is delightfully conflicted and full of contradiction as we all are.”
