Food insecurity remains a huge concern in our community. This past month the FCC Social Justice and Witness Committee approved our second donation to the Interfaith Food Hub, for a total of $2,400 this year.

The Interfaith Food Hub (IFH) is a collaborative project that provided more than 73,000 meals last year to participants in the programs of White Bird Clinic, HIV Alliance, First Place Family Center, Nightingale Community, Square One Village, Helping Hearts, Everyone Village, and the Garfield Safe Sleep Spot. In the winter, they also provide hot meals for some of the Egan Warming Centers. Volunteers and donations come from many groups and parishes, including First Christian Church, First Congregational Church, Temple Beth Israel, Sikh Gurdwara, St. Thomas More/Newman Center, Episcopal Churches of St. Thomas, St. Mary’s and the Resurrection, and Central Lutheran Church.

In First Christian’s licensed kitchen on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m., volunteers bag meals of sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and homemade cookies. In the licensed kitchen of St. Mary’s Episcopal, on Tuesday mornings, volunteers cook sandwich fillings and bake cookies. IFH gets some supplies from FOOD for Lane County and supplements them with ingredients purchased with donated funds.

The Interfaith Food Hub is always looking for volunteers to help with food prep and delivery. If you are interested, we will connect you with
people from First Congregational Church who are regular volunteers and who can help you get started – email socialjustice@fcceugene.org.
